I learned from my time teaching at an alternative school that it is possible to inspire even the most reluctant student to read, provided that you offered a wide enough range of topics and formats. So what was in my first years of teaching just a modest collection of books expanded to include more books, sponsored newspapers, and the most criminally underused resource of all: magazines. I started with the titles I already subscribed to, and then laid out a plan to amass as many as possible:

1. Bring in magazines you subscribe to (or buy) as soon as you’re done with them. I started by bringing in my favorite magazine, Wired, a very intelligent and accessible title that covers technology and its interaction with everything else. It’s been a huge hit with my 9th graders. Like most people, once I’m done reading the magazine, I have no more use for it. This also goes for any single issues you pick up along the way. Even if they don’t find the magazine of interest for reading, they can be used for projects (in your class or others).
2. Request free trial issues. I used to treat these solicitations as junk mail, but I realized that this is an easy opportunity to get more free reading material for my students. These often come bundled with your current subscriptions. For example, I got two free issues of Dwell, a beautifully illustrated architecture and design magazine, by just sending in a postcard that came with Wired.
3. Ask your local public library. Most public libraries sell older magazines for ridiculous prices like ten issues for a $1. When I reached out for donations for my classroom library earlier this year, I was invited to visit one local library and take what I wanted for free. These magazines were old and had already been discounted greatly, but since it was for a school all I had to do was ask. It helps to know people who work at or volunteer for the library, but again don’t be shy about asking for donations.
4. Search the classifieds. Especially for those of you in or near big cities, newspapers and Craigslist will often have listings for boxes full of free magazines. Most people are willing to give things away that they’d otherwise discard as long as you’re willing to go pick it up. You might even find a windfall of books if you’re lucky.
5. Ask for donations from friends, family and your community. My classroom received subscriptions to Discover and Mental Floss thanks to the generosity of several people. I was genuinely surprised at how much my students love Discover, which inspires me to keep this project going.
6. Grab a stack of free local magazines. Where I live, there’s at least five free papers covering the arts, music, things to do, and a whole list of local interest stories that students always love.

Take advantage of legitimately FREE magazine subscriptions

This is the greatest coup of all. Shortly after starting my plan, I remembered that DVD enthusiast website DVD Talk had a constantly updated list of free magazine subscriptions (click here and go to the first thread). More recently I found an entire forum devoted to free magazines on SlickDeals.net, an online community that aggressively seeks out the best deals on everything. Through these two lists I got free subscriptions for my classroom to Hispanic, Batanga Latin Music, Siempre Mujer, Spin, EGM, and Latina. There is enough variety on the two lists to ensure you’ll find something that will pique the interest of your students. Did I mention they are updated daily? They also offer leads on cheap subscriptions and can hook you up with somebody who wants to “trade” a subscription they have for one they want, if you’re willing to spend a little money.

Things to Avoid:

To avoid spam and additional solicitations, you should not use your primary email address to sign up for anything online. In other words, set up an email address to use just for signing up for things. If you want to avoid junk mail in your real mailbox, have the magazines shipped directly to school. This also eliminates the need to remove your home address before bringing it to school.

Obviously you have be careful with which magazines you choose to bring in. Even Wired, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend for most classrooms, sometimes has questionable content for students. For example, every issue of Men’s Health is full of information I wish all of my male students would read, but there’s a whole lot of sex in there too. It’s not worth the time it would take to rip out the stuff that might get you in trouble just to have one more title. The same goes for a lot of otherwise quality publications.

East meets west mainly on interracial dating sites. Interracial dating is very much part of the whole world now. Most men however make errors in judgment when making conversation on first dates. Well here is some piece of advice when looking to have an interracial relationship with Asian women:

Asian women are no different from any other women, contrary to popular belief that it is difficult dating them because of their culture. In reality, they are just every woman. There is nothing wrong with being attracted to or being in interracial relationships with Asian women. And there is nothing wrong with being attracted to some common cultural mannerisms. One thing that is wrong is generalizing a woman and not treating her as her own person or assuming that some cultural mannerisms have more meaning that they actually do. If you are planning to date interracially, keep in mind that these women are no different than other women. Asian women are every woman, They want to be treated with respect.

In Hispanic California marriage rules were similar to the rules governing the Anglos. Each forbade premarital sex, and sex outside the marriage was also outlawed. Also, in each divorces were nearly impossible to attain, only given under extreme circumstances, and even then the husband usually was given custody of any children. Women were legally “appendages” of their husbands. The California marriages were different in one respect, which is that Californian women kept their property after divorce while easterners did not. At the same time, California’s populations determined the standards of marriage, sexuality, and family. The gold-rush brought an influx of single young men to California. With three men to every one woman, it was difficult for a male to find a mate. He would have to either compete for women, turn to prostitutes, or go back home to find a mate. While the market was very competitive for men, women had their choice of nearly any man she wanted to choose. This is perfectly shown in the example of the Bullard family. The son moved to California with three sons and five daughters. Before any of the sons were married, all but one of the daughters were married. Each of the daughters regularly received gifts from suitors as well. The eldest Bullard brother eventually had to marry a woman who didn’t meet the ethnicity he had hopped saying ” If a man wished to marry a woman of a particular ethnic, religious, or racial background, his chances for success were measurable reduced.

Because of this lower ratio of men to woman, men had more options in addition to competing for a mate. They could also court a wife from back east, or seek prostitution. With a shortage of women and a surplus of men and gold, prostitutes came from all over. Most of the prostitutes in the American West were young, poor women, who were usually Indians, Asians, or Latinas. In Sacramento, nearly 60 percent of the prostitutes were minors. Prostitution was not the only alternative as seen in the case of reverend Sheldon. He had found it difficult to find a spouse in California, which gave him time to contemplate the women he had left behind in Ohio. Sheldon ended up marrying Priscilla Welsh, a woman whom he had a relationship before, which his parents had disapproved of.

These strange population demographics also effected the divorce rate as well. A Resident of Sonora claimed that eight out of ten women left their husbands. This number is staggering, and a bit overblown, but the shortage of women did affect women’s fidelity. Hurtado writes “Women were so scarce at the Buckeye Hill diggings that the appearance of one caused a near riot.” In some instances, the miners, who had acquired money because of discovered gold, bought new clothes and courted other men’s wives. Because California had such liberal divorce laws, they divorced at a much higher rate than other Americans. Also, the cruelty provisions act allowed women to seek divorce on grounds of cruelty. Not only did abused women benefit, but so did the single men of California.

What it says to me is that some Asian men are simply too hung up on the race issue to really reach out and take what they want.  There’s nothing wrong with an Asian male going out with white women or Latina women.  Most people don’t care about interracial relationships anymore, so it’s not like it’s a scandalous thing.  Most women, as the poll indicates, are even quick to describe some iconic Asian males as very sexy.

Yes, it is possible that some women may say they don’t feel attraction to Asians.  However, you have to take such a statement with a grain of salt.  Women are not motivated by physical attraction.  Women want to be emotionally stimulated.  They want their passions aroused and their emotions fulfilled.  A woman is not going to instantly know if a man has this sexy attitude just by his facial appearance.  (Yes body language is important, but faces are just extensions of the soul)  Usually a woman who makes such a blanket statement is associating her past with her present.  Maybe she believes that because she’s never dated an Asian, she can’t feel attraction to him.  Or maybe she believes that because she’s only dated black or white men, that’s what she’s attracted to.  Wrong!  She’s attracted to the alpha male profile, and any man of any race is capable of becoming that man.

Perhaps the biggest problem in Asian interracial dating is with the men themselves.  Asian players need to step up and realize that they are sexual beings like anyone else and deserve whatever woman they set their eyes on.  Don’t buy into all this trash about being out of the league of a beautiful white woman, or that all white women automatically reject Asians because of some sexual stereotypes.  The first step in scoring with white women is to get over your own self-limiting attitude and then focus on breaking down your woman’s own self-limiting barriers.

Bruce Lee was sexy, because he was an alpha male.  He was fearless, physically fit, ultra-disciplined and could hold some killer eye contact with the best of them.  You could be even sexier than Bruce Lee and redefine the modern sex symbol for your local Asian community!

Nudity and sex in American films are looked at by movie critics and viewers with a strong eye. Was the nudity or sex shown artistically to impact the story or was it completely gratuitous nudity and sex that added nothing to the movie? That is often the divide. A few movies that have been tagged as the later are “Showgirls” directed by Paul Verhoeven. The movie received an NC-17 rating because of the nudity and simulated sex scenes. It was a very controversial movie when it came out. Rape, lesbianism, and interracial relationships were some of the subjects covered in the movie. In a nutshell it’s about an attractive female drifter that climbs up from a stripper to a showgirl in Las Vegas. Whatever the movie was or was not I watched it an knew what to expect. It would have been strange to see a movie about a Las Vegas stripper that did not have nudity and sex. It would have had no realism in my opinion.

“Swordfish” directed by Dominic Sena and starring Hollywood stars John Travolta and Halle Berry is another movie that is tagged for gratuitous nudity. In brief the movie is about a bad guy who hires a computer hacker to help him electronically steal billions of dollars. The one scene that some people complained about was Halle Berry going topless for apparently no reason. Or as critics put it the scene was so out of context and did nothing to move the story or develop her character. The urban legend is she was paid an extra 2 million dollars for the topless scene. Regardless, I bet that scene helped sell a lot of movie tickets and DVD’s. While some say making movies is done for the art, the bottom line is always the money. Good call by the producers to add that scene.

“Hitman” directed by Xavier Gens has been viewed as offensive by some viewers because of the nudity and sex in the movie. The plot summary from IMDB.COM is this, A gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Eastern Europe. hired by a group known as “The Agency” to kill targets for cash. The main character Agent 47 finds himself in the company of Nika who is nude in a hotel room and shown straddling Agent 47 nude. I’m guessing this movie inspired by a video game was made as a total guy movie. I felt the nudity fit the plot because it was the art of seduction being played out by a woman who lived a dangerous life. She survived using her looks and cunning.

“Consignment” directed by Sid Kali is a killer urban action movie. It is gritty and realistic keeping to the beat of the rougher side of life dealing drugs. Based on true events, “Consignment” is about Tommy Jones, a reluctant East Coast drug dealer on the run with his wife, Yolanda, after a rival kingpin’s plan to have him ripped-off and murdered goes wrong. Double-crosses, a series of brutal murders, and an old secret from his wife’s past foils Tommy’s plans for a new start at life. This direct to video movie has taken some heat for a few scenes in it. First there is a very hot striptease scene where a curvy Latina seduces two drug dealers going topless down to a g-string. I have been in Las Vegas strip clubs and bachelor parties where that is the norm. Nothing offensive to me. I thought it fit the story because the stripper was a plant for a rival drug dealer learning what she could about his enemies. I thought Director Sid Kali showed the nudity in a tasteful and seductive light. The other is a rape scene where a female drug dealer is pulled from a shower and forced to give up the whereabouts of her former crime partner and lover. I myself do not know anyone that showers in their clothes except those two guys in the movie “Weird Science”. I thought the scene was powerful and added impact to the story because of the way it was shown. The focus was never the nudity but the pain on the face of the female drug dealer. Bravo to that actress! Bravo Sid Kali!

Other art house movies or movies that show nudity and sex are sometimes loved because the nudity and sex is deemed artistic. “Monster’s Ball” directed by Marc Foster landed star Halle Berry an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Plot summary from IMDB.COM Set in the Southern United States, ‘Monster’s Ball’ is a tale of a racist white man, Hank (played by Billy Bob Thornton), who falls in love with a black woman named Leticia (Halle Berry). Ironically Hank is a prison guard working on Death Row who executed Leticia’s husband (Sean Combs). Hank and Leticia’s interracial affair leads to confusion and new ideas for the two unlikely lovers. It had one of the most intense graphic love scenes I’ve seen in a movie. Some came out against it claiming it portrays black women as ferocious and lewd, with an appetite for sexual encounters, portrayed by the animalistic and raw quality of the sex scene and its racial context. Others say the scene shows two people’s desperate need for affection and comfort in the face of human tragedy. Whatever the case Halle Berry won an Oscar. She is an amazing actress.

“The Brown Bunny” directed by Vincent Gallo, who also stars in it with Chole Sevingy is a fiery independent film that takes a chance pushing the creative envelope. Plot summary pulled from IMDB.COM Professional motorcycle racer Bud Clay heads from New Hampshire to California to race again. Along the way he meets various needy women who provide him with the cure to his own loneliness, but only a certain woman from his past will truly satisfy him. What sets this movie apart is the highly controversial scene of actual oral sex between Gallo and co-star Chloe Sevigny in a shabby motel room. What made this scene so gripping was the sex scene was shown in such a lonely and painful way. Director Vincent Gallo captured the desperate and shallow feelings of the characters. That scene was included in the movie for shock appeal, it was there to show human pain during what most people think is a pleasurable experience. Bravo for taking the chance on making a radical movie. This director is a rock star! Bravo Vincent Gallo!

Overall I think nudity and sex are part of life. To censor it out of movies is not the answer. I say let movie makers put out their work, including nudity and sex, and let the viewers decide if they want to watch it or not. There are a ton of movies out there with no nudity or sex. Leave the option and the choice to the masses.
